Showing all 8Mechanic was changing water sprays on the scrubber motor and a rib (12x4x8) fell suddenly, struck & pushed EE against Miner. The rib fell in a way that the Cont. Miner took the blunt of the weight & force. The EE was not pinned & was able to walk back to the back of miner. The EE was conscious & talking, but pain in shoulder & chest.
The supervisor was using a four foot bar to pry down a loose rib. The top portion of the rib was loose and when he pried the top area, the bottom part of the rib popped out and landed on his left foot. EE was wearing leather metarsal boots.Ex-ray showed fractures to his left foot.
EE operating remote control miner and just moved to a new cut(X-cut 9-10 entry). He moved the miner cable out of the way and at this time a piece of rib (3'X2'X2' thick) fell from the left out-by corner. The piece of rib struck his right leg from the calf down. X-ray showed 4 hairline fractures in the right foot. Walking foot brace applied. Follow-up 2/13/06. 1st day lost 2/10/06.
The employee was assisting move a roof bolt machine and needed to roll the curtain up. When the employee was rolling the curtain up, a piece of rib fell from the intersection corner striking his left leg. The piece of rib corner was 2 ft W x 2 ft L x 2 ft H and fractured his left femur.
EE WAS ASSISTING WITH CLEANING SPILLAGE IN THE ROADWAYS AND AROUND THE FEEDER. EE STATED THAT EE EXAMINED THIS AREA AND NO HAZARDS WERE PRESENT, BUT WHILE WALKING THROUGH A X-CUT, A PIECE OF BINDER FELL FROM THE RIB AND STRUCK EE LEFT KNEE. THIS WAS A GLANCING BLOW AND NOT A DIRECT HIT. X-RAY WAS NEGATIVE.
The job was to recover rail & while dragging a rail down the entry, EE noticed a piece of rib starting to roll. EE tried to jump back, but the rib caught his left lower leg and ankle. The x-ray was negative, but his lower leg & ankle show damage to the muscles & tendons. A brace was applied to his foot & ankle. EE was unable to return to work his next scheduled shift.
Injured was helping to install arches when piece of rock fell from rib and struck back of hard hat causing a contusion.
