Miner was greasing equipment and an air bubble prevented the grease from pumping. He had one hand on top of the grease barrel with the other hand holding the pump and hit the tip of his thumb with the grease pump. The velocity with which he hit himself resulted in a cut toward the end of his thumb and later it was revealed that he fractured the very tip of his thumb.
