Pulling a jackleg steel out of the hole, when it came out he pinched his finger between the drill and the leg.

The miner was bolting with a jack-leg when the steel caught. When it spun around he grabbed the machine and his thumb was pinched between the stops for the hammer and the leg. It cut and broke his thumb.
