Powered haulage has killed 7 times as many miners as gas or dust explosions since 1983

Ask anyone to picture a mining death and the same images arrive: an explosion deep underground, a roof coming down, men trapped behind a collapse. The MSHA record tells a quieter and more mechanical story.

Across the 3,098 mining fatalities recorded on MSHA Form 7000-1 from 1983 through mid-2025, the single largest category is powered haulage: 933 deaths, 30 percent of the total. Powered haulage means being struck, crushed, or run over by something that moves. Haul trucks, conveyor belts, rail cars, shuttle cars. Machinery, the next category, adds 528 deaths, 17 percent. Together, moving equipment accounts for close to half of every mining death in the archive.

The explosion, the event the mythology is built on, sits near the bottom of the list. Ignition or explosion of gas or dust killed 132 miners over the same 42 years, about 4 percent of the total. A miner in this record was roughly seven times more likely to be killed by powered haulage than by the blast most people associate with the job.

The cave-in follows a similar arc. Fall of roof or back, the geological collapse that defines coal mining in the public imagination, accounts for 385 deaths, 12 percent, and it is fading. Grouped into rough eras, roof-fall deaths run 183, then 101, 55, 28, and 17 across the record. Four out of five of those deaths, 311 of 385, happened at coal mines, and as underground coal has contracted the roof-fall death has contracted with it. It is being engineered and mined out of existence at the same time.

Powered haulage has done no such thing. It was the leading cause of death in the first era on record and it is the leading cause in the most recent one. It kills at surface mines and underground, at coal mines and metal mines. A conveyor does not care what is on the belt.

None of this counts exposure. We do not know how many hours miners spent near haul trucks versus near an explosive gas boundary, so these are shares of deaths, not rates of risk per hour worked. What the shares do settle is the picture. The dramatic killers, the explosion and the collapse, are real but uncommon, and in the case of the roof fall receding. The thing that actually ends mining lives, year after year, is a piece of moving equipment on an ordinary shift.
