US coal mines that release the most methane

Bailey Mine reported liberating more methane than any other US underground coal mine in 2023, at 111,177 metric tons of CH4 reported to EPA's Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. Next are ENLOW FORK MINE (92,247 t) and Marion County Mine (83,341 t).

These are operator-reported emissions figures, not an MSHA enforcement metric: EPA collects them at facility level, and only facilities whose EPA filing resolves to a single MSHA mine record are shown, about 70% of reporting facility-years. Methane drives both climate accounting and underground explosion risk, which is why a gassy mine runs under stricter ventilation requirements. The CO2-equivalent figure uses the GWP-25 factor EPA's published data applies.
