Employee fell to concrete floor at base of preheater - apparently from the second level where he had been performing work. Death was apparently immediate. There were no witnesses to the accident and it is not known how the employee fell or whether he tried to access his work from the safety handrail along the catwalk.

INJURED WAS TRYING TO UNPLUG A CHUTE THAT WAS FILLED OR CONTAINED KILN FEED THAT HAD SPILLED FROM FEED END OF THE CEMENT KILN. WHEN THE INJURED HIT THE CHUTE WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER, THE MATERIAL (1100 DEG F) DISLODGED AND SPLASHED BACK UP AND COVERED THE INJURED.
