RYCZEK QUARRY sits in Garrett County, Maryland, where the Census mining category is 1.5% of county employment.

Local economic context
County figures come from the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey, 5-year pooled estimates, so the 2023 vintage covers 2019 through 2023. The Census category is 'mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction', which is broader than MSHA jurisdiction and includes oil and gas workers no mine employs. These figures describe the surrounding county, not this mine, and are not a factor in any specific incident.

While selecting stone suitable for flag (1/2" to 2 1/2" thick), employee encountered a stone which was too big on one end (2 1/2' x 1 1/2' - 2" on one end & 4" on the other end). He dropped it on a stone ledge to break larger end off. This caused 1 of several fist size pieces to fly up & hit him in the eye, knocking his safety glasses off.
