Illinois Fuel Company LLC · Accident type, without injuries

Area experienced a 10" to 11" rainfall event with 8" falling in the first 24 hours. This event followed 8.2" in feb. and 3.5" earlier in March. runoff overwhelled. 8" turbine pump in the sump at surface of drift mine even with the start of. 8" diesel backup. Water raised such that water entered the mine beginning at 2 pm on 3/18 and mine became inundation at 7 am on the 4th.

9/23 & 9/24 with reported 10" of rain (guage at mine went to 6") overwhelmed the sump at the drift mine pit and the 8" electric pump and power went off and the 8" diesel backup's clutch went out and water ran into the mine inundating it for the 300' it had advanced. Water roofed on left side 4th & 5th xcuts (#1 entry) and water 3000' at 4th xcut in #7 entry and face.

TWO SHUTTLE CARS COLLIDED IN AN INTERSECTION DUE TO A FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE BETWEEN OPERATORS AND THE PRESENCE OF A LINE CURTAIN WHICH HINDERED VISIBILITY. THE BUMPER OF ONE CAR ENTERED THE O PERATORS COMPARTMENT OF THE INJURED MANS CAR, SQUEEZING HIM AND CAUSING A FRACTURE TO HIS PELVIS.

RUN OFF OF WATER FROM THE MINE SURFACE AREA ENTERED THE MINE DRIFTS DURING A THUNDERSTORM. THE WATER PARTIALLY BLOCKED THE INTAKE ESCAPEWAY. THE ENTRIES HAD BEEN DEVELOPED BETWEEN 80 AND 150 FEET FROM THE HIGHWALL. THE WATER WAS PUMPED FROM THE MINE. NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT OCCURRED.
